A couple of weeks back I went to the launch of the Little Beats zine ditro. I picked up numerous zines, and I gave away a few of the last issues of Capital Eyes #5. I was going through my bags today, and realised I still have one left. That is a bad habit of mine, I give out all the zines and then I realise I haven't got one left for myself.
My friend Luke was playing in his band Hoodlum Shouts as part of the launch. He used to play in bands such as Mightyfew and Red Menace, the new band is pretty sweet. Something like a cross between At The Drive In and Midnight Oil. A really solid rock band. I was really impressed by them, and also by the range of zines in the distro. A lot of them are more perzines/art zines etc, not so much music oriented stuff, but there were zines from around the country and a few internationals. I picked up a $10 grab bag and a couple of others. The bags even had a Little Beats logo on the side, which I thought was a great touch.
The whole night really had the feel of some kind of Berlin street party, rather than another night out in Canberra. It was held at itripiskip in Braddon, which during the day sells fashion, art and other general stuff. I have been to one magazine launch there before, it worked really well also. I would like to do something similar for a zine launch at some stage. It would be a lot of fun.
